FAQ’s
Q: What is retouching?
A: The process of retouching is mostly about correction - there are elements of the photo the camera doesn’t always capture fully or display correctly. Retouching might also include blending or removing objects from the photo (skin blemishes, stray hairs, something in the background). The term retouching is also known as post processing.
Q: Are the photos put through any “bulk process” production software that can apply settings, presets or filters to photos in bulk, in a very short amount of time?
A: No - every photo is retouched individually and by hand, using Photoshop and Lightroom. No presets, no filters, no bulk processing.
Q: What elements of a photo need to be fixed?
A: Although different photos have different areas that need to be addressed, there are some common items addressed in every image including: Exposure, Color and White Balance, Highlights & Shadows, usually Skin, Hair, Face and sometimes the Background.
Q: Why retouch my photo if it already looks good?
A: Although a great photo may seem like nothing else is needed, the taking of the photo in camera is only about 50% of the journey to a professional, industry grade photograph. Even if nothing is altered, smoothed, or removed from a photo, the elements above still need to be addressed every time. Post processing also includes correcting skin tone to look authentic, enhancing overall color, adding correct contrast and sharpening, sizing and cropping the image for your needs, preparation for print and more.
Q: What can’t be changed in post processing?
A: YOU !! - Your look, your vibe, your expression, your pose. The purpose of the photoshoot is to capture YOU the best we can, (and everything else as correct in camera as possible). The purpose then of post processing is to take all the detail and technicals and turn them into a great photograph!
